Why did Bush campaign mgr and head of the RNC, Ken Mehlman feel the need to announce that he's gay?

Why does he think anyone would care? And isn't this suspicious timing? Do you think his gayness has made him go rogue and he is now trying to sabotage conservatives in the mid-terms?
